Participation Localities: Right to Vote Resolutions
Local Right to Vote Resolutions and Pro-Voting Policy
Promote Our Vote works with community leaders to pass Right to Vote Resolutions and pro-voting policies. A Right to Vote Resolution identifies the position of a locality on voting rights issues and builds a foundation for the advancement of pro-voting policies. These resolutions also encourage other legislative bodies and executives to support an affirmative right to vote in the constitution. Resolutions do not establish policy, though they can voice support for policy initiatives. We provide community leaders with electoral research, legal analysis and communications assistance for the advancement of Right to Vote Resolutions and pro-voting policy. Once a locality passes a Right to Vote Resolution or pro-voting policy, they become part of Promote Our Vote's Participation Network, which offers resources and connects advocates to protect and promote voting rights.
Why Pass a Right to Vote Resolution?
Federal protections are failing to safeguard suffrage rights in our communities. State policies and practices are creating undue burdens for voters; and in some cases, anti-voting laws directly disenfranchise citizens. It's no wonder voter turnout in local elections is at an all-time low. Promote Our Vote seeks to stimulate local turnout through grassroots action. We work with community leaders and local officials to pass Right to Vote Resolutions and identify practices and policies that promote the right to vote -- in accordance with our belief that voting is a fundamental right in a democracy.
