Tools Features

Tools features information about our program, including Right to Vote Resolutions and pro-voting policies and practices. Our resolution section showcases example, draft and community-oriented resolutions. Our policy section highlights innovative laws, such as a same-day registration, Saturday voting, and a lowered voting age. Our practices section points out how you can get involved to increase participation in your community through actions like hosting a voter registration drive, group voting and volunteering as a poll worker.

What is a Right to Vote Resolution?

Resolutions serve as a statement of principle for localities, campuses, organizations and other individuals and communities. A Right to Vote Resolution maintains that voting is a fundamental right in a democracy. It calls for an explicit right to vote in the Constitution and establishes a task force to explore measures that improve voter turnout, protect voter access, and expand suffrage. Resolutions may include support for additional pro-voting policies and practices, but must contain a call for a right to vote in the Constitution and a task force on pro-voting policies and practices.

What is a Pro-Voting Policy?

Pro-voting policies are laws, ordinances and charter amendments passed in the spirit of a Right to Vote Resolution. They increase voter participation, protect voting rights and expand suffrage. Local ordinances and city charter amendments, which are laws enacted and enforced by local governments, can have a dramatic impact on local suffrage rights. After passing a Right to Vote Resolution and creating a pro-voting task force, localities are encouraged to move forward by proposing pro-voting policies to ensure local suffrage rights.

 What is a Pro-Voting Practice?

Pro-voting practices are best practices implemented to increase voter turnout. These actions can be taken on by individuals and groups, as they require no change in laws or official action. Common pro-voting practices include voting registration drives, public service announcements that broadcast election information, and offering free rides to the polls.
